Illustrating foliage and flowers can be quite challenging and daunting. So I have developed a technique where you can draw them using pattern brush in Adobe Illustrator.

1
Draw a leaf. Make the leaf positioned horizontally.

2
Drag the vector drawing on Brushes Pallet (Window>Brushes)
2
3
Select New Pattern Brush when prompted for brush type to create.
3
4
Pattern Brush Options appears on the screen. Select Hue Shift on Colorization. Leave the rest of the settings at default.
4
5
Select the brush on the Brushes Pallet. Using pencil tool or brush tool, Do short and quick strokes.
5
6
Select the leaves and make sure that you’re on active mode is stroke. Change the stroke colors.

7
Using pen tool (P) or pencil tool (N), draw and fill a dark green shrub.
7
8
Using brush (B) or pencil tool (N), repeatedly do quick and short brush strokes with different shades on top of the dark green shrub. Do the dark ones first and draw the lighter colored leaves afterwards.

Next, draw for a flower with a stem on it. Draw it on horizontal position.

10
Follow steps 2-4 except that you choose “none” on colorization.
10
11
Repeat process as that of step 8. We have now a shrub with white blossoms!
